Ongoing Planning ExercisesChemainus Town Centre Revitalization PlanEarly in 2011, the Municipality began a process to develop a vision for the development of downtown Chemainus as a vibrant, mixed-use town core that embraces the community's unique cultural heritage. With the assistance of a consultant, a Working Group comprised of Chemainus residents, Chemainus Advisory Committee members, and community stakeholders, numerous workshops and planning sessions were held to prepare a draft plan that was subsequently presented to the public for input. Through open houses held in Chemainus, valuable feedback was received on the overall plan, as well as on specific items like proposed sites for a new Chemainus library and community centre, identifying a site for a new skatepark, plans for development of the area known as the 'benchlands,' and how new walking and multi-use trail networks would contribute to a walkable community. Based upon all the input received--both formal and informal--throughout the Plan development process, the Working Group adjusted the Plan to ensure that current needs will be met and that the historic culture of Chemainus would be maintained. On November 8, 2011, at a Special Council meeting held in Chemainus, the Municipal Council unanimously adopted the Plan. The Chemainus Town Centre Revitalization Plan can be downloaded in whole (6MB file), or in parts: Part 1 - Table of Contents Part 2 - Introduction Part 3 - Key Projects Part 4 - Implementation Active Transportation Plan - Working TogetherManeuvering the streets, sidewalks and trails is about to get much easier for all residents and visitors of the Cowichan Valley. The City of Duncan, Cowichan Tribes and the Municipality of North Cowichan are working together on an Active Transportation Plan. Please give us your feedback by completing the survey.
