2010 Advisory Planning Commission Community Awards

The Municipality of North Cowichan is pleased to announce the winners of its sixth annual Community Planning Awards Program.  The program, created by the Municipality's Advisory Planning Commission, celebrates the best efforts of North Cowichan's community builders.  Nominations were received from home owners, developers, and non-profit groups.

The Planning Awards Program recognizes innovative and attractive development activities within the Municipality; encourages individual community members, developers and business owners to plan for the future; demonstrates the goals of the Official Community Plan; builds community pride; and celebrates the efforts of the community members and the development industry for improving our community.

Congratulations to the following winners

The Quamichan Stewardship Society was selected for the Quamichan Watershed Plan under the Plans with Actions category.  The Plan would see Quamichan Lake restored to health by managing the Quamichan Lake watershed.

Cowichan Green Communities was selected for the Warmland House Community Garden under the Community Spaces category.  The project transformed a vacant lot into a community garden which contains wheelchair accessible raised beds, herb and vegetable gardens, a wild plant garden and solar greenhouse.  The garden is used primarily by the residents of the Warmland House, but people from the community are also welcome.

Mortell Development Company Ltd. was selected for the Crofton Hotel renovation under the Enterprise and Innovation category.  The renovation of this 1902 heritage building fits the west coast style, providing North Cowichan with a pub, bistro, liquor store and live entertainment venue.

Maple Mountain Estates Ltd. was selected for the Woodland Hills subdivision under the Structures and Development category.  Woodland Hills is a residential development in a rural setting which was developed with very little disturbance to the original landscape that contains large areas of Garry Oak ecosystems.

Also in the Structures and Development category, David Coulson Design Ltd. was awarded honourable mention for the Stewart House at Woodland Drive.  This project made use of second growth Douglas fir trees from the property and minimizes its environmental footprint through use of geothermal heating and air conditioning, extensive native plantings were incorporated into the landscape plan and rainwater chains are used to direct rainfall to the garden.

Congratulations again to all the winners and those who were nominated.
