Climate Action & Energy Plan

We are now in the implemenetation phase of an exciting project that will help guide the future of land use, local economy, energy use and emissions production in our community. The Climate Action and Energy Plan (CAEP) is helping North Cowichan lower its energy and carbon footprint while improving the local economy and leading to a better quality of life for residents and visitors.

The Project

The CAEP was adopted by Council on February 20,  2013.  The CAEP has taken inventory of our community’s existing energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and identified future trends based on population, land-use, technology and other factors.

The CAEP identifies opportunities to reduce energy consumption and emissions through community actions, policy and other municipal mechanisms. The CAEP articulates a detailed understanding of the social, environmental and economic impacts of the proposed emissions and energy reduction actions which will guide us as we select the best actions to pursue.  The CAEP is informed by in-person and online public input and has a low carbon economy focus.

Goals

The CAEP, when implemented, will help to enable us to:

  1. Achieve carbon neutrality as soon as possible.

  2. Achieve a 33% reduction in GHG emissions by 2025.

  3. Sequester more carbon than we produce.
