The Human Resources department assists the organization in the following areas:

Recruitment, selection and retention

Getting the right people into the organization, then working to keep them.

Employee relations  

Responding to employee questions and concerns.

Salary, benefit and pension administration

Ensuring that our employees are fairly compensated for the work they do, helping them understand their benefits program, and assisting with the transition from employment to retirement.

Training and development

Keeping our skilled workforce up to date on advancements in their fields, and preparing them for future opportunities.

Labour relations

Working with CUPE, Local 358 to address grievances and other issues, and assisting the Municipality with negotiating the collective agreement.

Health and safety

Working with other departments and managers to keep our employees safe by developing safe work procedures, investigating incidents, and conducting worksite inspections.

Leave management

Assisting employees in returning to work from illness or injury and helping the Municipality meet its duty to accommodate to the point of undue hardship.

Administration

Maintaining employees’ files, enrolling employees on benefits and making changes where necessary, and helping develop policies and procedures.

The unionized employees of the Municipality of North Cowichan are represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 358.
