Supportive Housing - 2983 Drinkwater Road
BC Housing is working with the Municipality of North Cowichan to build a new, permanent, purpose-built supportive housing building at 2983 Drinkwater Road.
This housing is needed to ensure some of the Cowichan Valley’s most vulnerable people can access a basic and fundamental human right: housing. The homes will provide safe, secure housing with wrap-around supports for community residents who are currently experiencing or at risk of homelessness in the region. This housing is an opportunity for people to leave the streets, parks and shelter system for safe and stable housing and move towards improved quality of life.
Construction of the new building is expected to begin in the fall of 2020.
Housing with Supports
Supportive housing is a self-contained home with support services to help residents lead healthier and safer lives. Supports include medical health services, mental health and addictions services, food, laundry and security. All residents will pay rent.
Supportive Housing is not a Shelter.
Supportive housing assists people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, and creates successful tenancies and healthier communities. Read more here.
Located at 2983 Drinkwater Road, this new building will offer approximately 50 permanent, purpose-built studio apartments to people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness. The housing will be operated by Lookout Housing and Health Society, an experienced non-profit housing operator that will staff and manage the building 24/7 and provide building residents with support services. These supports include medical health services, mental health and addictions services, food, laundry, and security. Construction is expected to be complete in early 2021.
We recognize this is a new kind of housing in North Cowichan. In order to support the successful integration of the building and tenants into the surrounding community, BC Housing is leading community engagement to explore ways to build an inclusive community where everyone has the opportunity for safe and healthy places to live and work.
