Local Area Plans

The purpose of Local Area Plans are to provide detailed policy frameworks and implementation strategies for when neighbourhood revitalization and redevelopment take place. They are a conceptual document that provides guidance for citizens, developers and municipal staff when contemplating development proposals and community initiatives. They also provide certainty on the future direction of the community as it grows and changes over the coming years. North Cowichan has four local area plans:

The Official Community Plan (OCP) places the Bell McKinnon area within the Urban Containment Boundaries, designating it as a growth centre. This neighbourhood plan and servicing study ensures the Bell McKinnon area is developed in an orderly and consistent way and that servicing and infrastructure options are explored and planned for.

The Chemainus Town Centre Revitalization Plan is a Local Area Plan (LAP) that builds on the OCP by providing more detailed guidance in Chemainus.
