Council Matters - June 3, 2015


At its June 3 regular meeting, Council received the2014 Annual Municipal Report. Within its 93 pages, there is a wealth of historical, financial, and other information about the Municipality, including significant accomplishments and projects completed over the last year.

As well, Council gave first reading to the University Village Local Area Plan Bylaw. Prior to considering adoption of the Bylaw, an open house will be held on Thursday, June 18, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. to give the public an opportunity to provide feedback. Please consider attending this open house which will be held in the gymnasium at Alexander Elementary School. The most notable change in theUniversity Village Local Area Plan since last year's open house is an adjustment to the Urban Containment Boundary (UCB) which has been enlarged to include a portion of the Fun Pacific Golf Centre site into the South End Growth Centre. In conjunction with this proposed change, Council started the process to amend the Official Community Plan's UCB so that it is consistent with the proposed University Village Local Area Plan. 

Council also gave first reading to another Official Community Plan amendment bylaw which proposes to reduce the Crofton growth centre, move the UCB, and reduce the size of the mixed-use commercial core area. This amendment bylaw, once adopted, will ensure that the changes proposed in the Crofton Local Area Plan are consistent with North Cowichan's Official Community Plan. A public information session will be held at the Crofton Community Centre on June 9, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Finally, for those really interested in Municipal finances, the2014 Statement of Financial Information was also reviewed and approved by Council.
