Open House Scheduled for University Village Local Area Plan
June 4, 2015
North Cowichan Council invites members of the public to attend an open house to view the final University Village Local Area Plan and provide feedback before it considers adopting "University Village Local Area Plan Bylaw", No. 3582. Council gave first reading to the University Village Local Area Plan Bylaw on June 3, 2015.
An open house is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, 2015, in the gym of Alexander Elementary School, located at 2471 Beverly Street, Duncan. The most significant change in the plan since the April 2014 open house is the proposed amendment to the Urban Containment Boundary which has been enlarged to include a portion of the Fun Pacific Golf Centre property into the South End Growth Centre.
I encourage the community to attend the open house to give feedback on this important plan, stated Mayor Jon Lefebure. Council has reviewed the plan on several occasions over the last year and we believe we now have a robust plan which achieves growth in the right locations, while providing greater protection for the Somenos Marsh.
In partnership with the City of Duncan, and with partial funding from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and BC Hydro, the Local Area Plan was developed over a two-year period with the assistance of a dedicated working group, and includes input from numerous homeowners, business owners, and other stakeholders.
Once adopted, the Local Area Plan will give developers, homeowners and businesses more certainty as to how this area will be developed over the next 30 years. This Plan also outlines capital projects for both the Municipality of North Cowichan and City of Duncan to complete in this time frame.
