Council Matters for April 19, 2017

On April 19, 2017, Council held a Regular Council Meeting from 1:30 p.m. until about 4:30 p.m. Inspector Ray Carfantan appeared as a delegation to talk about the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP Detachment's activities during the first quarter. Once again, he emphasized a significant increase in calls for service and the need for more members to deal with them.

Amy Melmock, Cowichan Valley Regional Districts Economic Development Officer, was the second delegation. She provided an update on various initiatives of Economic Development Cowichan, including a very successful Business Leaders Breakfast, which was held on April 11, 2017.

Municipal Forester Darrell Frank presented the 2016 Annual Forestry Report, detailing a very successful yearthe second most profitable in the history of the Forestry Program.  Following his presentation, Mr. Frank was presented with a certificate and pin in appreciation of his 30 years of dedicated work at North Cowichan. Congratulations, Mr. Frank!

Staff were directed by Council to develop a policy and regulatory framework to allow for weddings and other special events on land within the Agricultural Land Reserve. This is to align with new regulations of the Agricultural Land Commissions Act that allow up to 10 "gatherings for an event".

Finally, Council gave pre-budget approval for a $175,000 grant to the Cowichan Sportsplex to aid in the renewal of the track surface, which is expected to take place this summer.
