Council Matters for November 7, 2018
November 8, 2018
North Cowichans new Council was sworn into office on November 7, 2018. Here we are:
Each member of Council swore an oath of office that commits them to acting in the interests of citizens and conducting themselves in a respectful manner. After the formal ceremony, Council made some decisions on committees and appointments. Of note, appointees to the Cowichan Valley Regional District Board will be myself (Mayor), Councillor Douglas, and Councillor Marsh (alternates Councillors Toporowski, Justice, and Manhas). In addition, we established two new Committees: the Regulatory Review Standing Committee (with myself as Chair) and the First Nations Relations Standing Committee (with Councillor Toporowski as Chair). A full listing of the Committee appointments made yesterday is available in the meeting agenda.
I also provided a Mayors address, in which I stated my excitement for working with this new Council and learning from each others diverse perspectives. I noted that Council will be working on establishing strategic goals and directions, and from those, we will determine how we move forward with a number of our existing and legacy Committees for which appointments have not yet been made. My full address is posted on Facebook and you can read it here.
I am looking forward to kicking off some strategic planning work with Council and will use this mailing list to continue sending updates after every Council meeting.
Thank you for reading and staying informed! Our next regular Council meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 21 at 1:30 p.m.
