North Cowichan Seeks Public Input on Seasonal, Off-Leash Dog Parks

(North Cowichan, BC) North Cowichan wants to hear from residents regarding the possibility of designating additional public beach accesses as seasonal, off-leash parks for dogs.

The demand for off-leash access to public lands, especially access to beach areas, is increasing, and the Municipality often hears from dog owners requesting that certain beach areas be added to the list of off-leash parks.

We have seen in other communities that the question of off-leash dog areas is a topic that generates strong opinions, both for and against, says Ernie Mansueti, North Cowichans Director of Parks, Forestry and Recreation. We want to hear from residents about which public beach accesses, if any, are best suited for this type of purpose. Its important that we ask these questions to ensure that the benefits of any new off-leash areas outweigh the possible drawbacks.

Residents interested in providing feedback can connect to the topic on North Cowichans online community consultation website, PlaceSpeak. Feedback will be gathered until Sunday, September 9, 2018, and then presented to Council at a future meeting for their consideration.
