Construction Starting Soon on New Chemainus Library

Construction will soon begin on the long-anticipated new library branch in Chemainus, to be located at 9796 Willow Street on a vacant property owned by North Cowichan.

Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) announced this week that CCM Construction Ltd., a Vancouver Island-based construction firm, was awarded the contract to build the new library. Once built, the state-of-the-art library will have 5,000 square feet of floor space and many amenities for the community.

“This is a big step forward in the development of the new library and so exciting for the Chemainus community,” says Al Siebring, Mayor of North Cowichan. “North Cowichan has long-supported the realization of this new branch, providing a long-term lease to VIRL for the site on Willow Street”.

“This is an exciting development for the entire North Cowichan region,” says Chair of the VIRL Board of Trustees, Brenda Leigh. “As the newly appointed Board Chair and with Debra Toporowski as the new Trustee for North Cowichan, the news that shovels will soon be in the ground for the Chemainus library is a wonderful development so early in our tenures. The people of Chemainus have waited patiently for this day to arrive. I am thrilled that your new library is moving forward.”

A new site and building for the library was identified as a key project in North Cowichan’s Chemainus Town Centre Revitalization Plan, which was adopted in November 2011. There have been numerous community meetings and input into the library design over the last few years.

Further information, including renderings of the new library, can be found on the VIRL website: A New Branch for Chemainus.
