First Nations Consultation on the Future of the Municipal Forest Reserve Moves Ahead
August 28, 2020
(North Cowichan, BC) – On August 26, 2020, a meeting between North Cowichan’s Mayor and Council and the Cowichan Nation Alliance (CNA) took place as part of a government-to-government consultation on the future of the Municipal Forest Reserve (MFR). This meeting was the first step of an important process to listen, learn, and begin a dialogue about the Cowichan Nation Alliance’s interests in the MFR.
“Last year, our Council made key commitment to ‘Engagement” as one of the cornerstones in our Strategic Plan”, says Mayor Al Siebring. “That specifically includes ‘developing strong relationships with Indigenous peoples.’ The consultations we’re doing with the CNA on our Municipal Forest is closely aligned with that goal, and I look forward to continuing the discussions.”
