North Cowichan to Install New Signalized Crosswalk in Chemainus
August 20, 2020
(North Cowichan, BC) – In response to several safety-related concerns raised by community members in Chemainus, North Cowichan will be installing a new signalized crosswalk on Henry Road, adjacent to the Mount Brenton Golf Course.
“Average daily traffic counts in both directions show approximately 5,500 vehicles travel this stretch of Henry Road per day. This includes 250 large axle trucks, and what’s even more concerning, is the fact that many of these vehicles are travelling well above the speed limit,” said Mayor Al Siebring. “Currently, patrons of the Mt. Brenton Golf Course and pedestrians who frequent the Cowichan Valley Trail cross Henry Road in multiple locations which are unmarked, unsanctioned, and unsafe. I have long shared the community’s concern over this and am happy to see a new signalized crosswalk being installed to augment pedestrian safety.”
The cost of this new project is estimated at $60,000 and will be covered by funds re-allocated from the Chemainus Road Upgrade Project, as Phase Two has come in under-budget. The estimated cost includes a painted crosswalk, flashing beacons, protection barriers and a channelized concrete median for lane narrowing and traffic calming. Construction is slated to begin in the fall.
