October 13, 2020 - Windstorm Update
October 13, 2020
Over the past 12 to 24 hours North Cowichan has endured a substantial windstorm with heavy rainfall which has left many residents out of power, particularly in Chemainus. For current information on hydro outages and projected service restoration, please visit BC Hydro’s web page: https://www.bchydro.com/power-outages/app/outage-map.html#outage=1511296
Strong winds are forecasted to continue into this evening, with a wind warning in effect from Duncan to Nanaimo. For more information and updated weather forecasts visit Environment Canada’s website: https://weather.gc.ca/warnings/report_e.html?bc46
Currently, there are downed trees across North Cowichan. Chemainus and Crofton were most affected and our Operation’s Department has crews out in these areas working to remove fallen debris, trees, and branches. To do so safely, staff must ensure any downed power lines are not live by working with BC Hydro as they restore services. We thank residents for their ongoing patience as we continue this work.
Unfortunately, due to the high volume of rain we’ve experienced, the portion of Chemainus Road that is currently under construction (between River Road and Victoria Street) has accumulated a lot of water on it and is difficult to traverse. Residents are asked to kindly plan an alternate route of travel and avoid this area if at all possible.
Updates will be posted as more information becomes available.
To report a tree or debris blocking a road or right of way, please call our afterhours emergency line at 250.746.5112.
