Chemainus Road Revitalization Project Complete

(North Cowichan, BC) – The significant underground works and surface improvements to Chemainus Road, from Henry Road to Victoria Street in Chemainus, are now complete. As recommended in the Chemainus Town Centre Revitalization Plan, this major project improves the accessibility, safety, and attraction of this important arterial road.

The project took place in two phases; the first beginning in fall 2019 with underground improvements including the replacement of aging sanitary, water, and storm pipes; installation of new storm pipes, rain gardens, and catch basins; and road widening and installation of a small section of sidewalk from Victoria Street to River Road on the west side of Chemainus Road. The second phase began last summer and included a new roundabout; reconstruction and widening of the roadway; installation of new sidewalk and paved bike lanes; new street lights; beautification features such as flower gardens, rain gardens, grass boulevards, and street trees; and new fencing on the east side of Chemainus Road.

“I want to thank the community for their patience with this project,” said Mayor Al Siebring. “Completing the bulk of the work during a global pandemic was certainly a challenge, with more pauses than we anticipated, but I think everyone can agree that it was well worth the wait. Chemainus is a beautiful and charming town, and this revitalized gateway into our community is the perfect addition.”
