Maintenance closure at Cowichan Aquatic Centre begins June 5

(North Cowichan, BC) – The annual maintenance closure at Cowichan Aquatic Centre begins June 5. The facility will fully reopen July 3 with the summer schedule and programming in effect.

During the four-week closure, the Cowichan Aquatic Centre will be fully closed from June 5 to June 18 and July 1 and 2. From June 19 to June 30, reception and the fitness areas will be open Monday – Friday 6am – 6pm, while the aquatic side will remain closed. Note, the aquatic side of the facility will also be closed to the public on Sunday, June 4 to accommodate a swim meet.

“Our typical three-week maintenance closure is a bit longer this year, as we are combining the maintenance work with a retrofit project on the interior of the building,” said Neil Pukesh, North Cowichan’s Director of Parks, Recreation and Forestry. “Installing the fall prevention anchors on the ceiling during the maintenance closure will prevent us from having an additional closure to complete this important work. What’s also exciting is that we’ll also be receiving quite a bit of new fitness equipment, so we’ll need the time for installation and space planning.”

The maintenance involves draining the wave and swirl pools, partially draining the competition pool, cleaning, replacing and grouting tiles, cleaning and polishing the slides, and deep cleaning the changerooms. Once this work is done, all pools are refilled, and chemicals are balanced accordingly.
