Access to Records

British Columbia’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act provides a right of public access to records in North Cowichan’s custody and control.

How to access records

Property-related questions (realtors or property owners)

Contact the Building Department directly at building@northcowichan.ca to request copies of routinely available or streamlined documents from property files (building permits, occupancy certificates, building plans, building site surveys & survey certificates not registered on title). You will likely receive these documents faster than requesting them through the formal FOI process.

Not sure who to contact? View our flowchart to determine which department is the best to contact.

Routinely available records

Many questions can be routinely answered by contacting the department responsible for the relevant information. Information provided through routine channels includes answers to general questions related to departmental and governmental operations.  Department staff can also provide copies of routinely available records directly (with personal information removed).
