Demolition Permit

The Planning & Building Department is responsible for the administration and issuance of demolition permits. By providing a clearly defined checklist and outlining required documents, we aim to ensure that applicants are fully equipped for a smooth application process. Adherence to local bylaws and regulations, including WorkSafeBC requirements for buildings constructed prior to 1990, is imperative. Detailed guidelines have been provided to facilitate compliance and streamline the approval process.

Step 1: Plan your location

You must submit a completed Planning Compliance form with every building permit application. Development permit areas (DPAs), Agriculture Land Designation (ALR), zoning bylaw regulations and charges on title all play crucial roles and can significantly impact the location of the building site. Proper consideration of these elements is essential for any construction project to ensure legal adherence, environmental responsibility, and the overall success of the building project. You will be asked to provide a site plan to scale with location of building(s) to be demolished.

Step 2: Demolition permit application

You must follow the checklist below before submitting an application. This checklist is intended to provide applicants with the minimum requirements for a demolition permit application. The supporting documents must be submitted with the application to be accepted and approved. One application and permit per building or structure.

Step 3: Submit your application online

Step 4: Building permit fees

  • Once a building permit has been approved a fee slip will be provided for payment.
  • $5,000 bonding / security as prescribed in Building Bylaw 2003, No. 3172 (released when all work is completed to the satisfaction or the Chief Building Inspector)

Step 5: Site inspection

It is the responsibility of the applicant/owner to contact the Planning & Building Department to arrange a site visit to confirm completion of demolition. Call 250-746-3102 to request an inspection.

Important information about permits

Inspections may be required at various stages of your project. Some projects may require both a development permit and a building permit. If you are unsure, please contact the Building Department to ensure you have all the necessary paperwork before proceeding.
