North Cowichan's recently adopted Master Transportation Plan and Climate Change Risk Assessment and Adaptation Strategy provide a road map for how we will get around and be better prepared for climate change.
Specific projects and actions arising from these plans will be incorporated into North Cowichan’s 2025 budget. Planning for the budget begins this fall. Learn more and how to get involved at connectnorthcowichan.ca/Budget-2025
The Master Transportation Plan (MTP) was informed through extensive public and stakeholder engagement and provides clear direction on improving transportation options for all people over the next 20 years. Building on the OCP goal of focused growth and development, the MTP sets direction for incorporating pedestrian-oriented and multi-modal transportation options within these growth centres, and ensuring other areas are connected through well-planned roadways and active transportation options.
The Climate Change Risk Assessment and Adaptation Strategy dovetails with the Cowichan Valley Regional District’s Regional Climate Change Adaptation Strategy. North Cowichan’s strategy is guided by local lived experience and climate science, builds on existing strengths, and focuses attention where effort and impact is balanced. Adaptation pathways provide strategic direction to respond to floods, wildfires, heat domes, and droughts, which have impacted North Cowichan in recent years. Ten objectives outline actions that maintain municipal services, preserve and restore the environment, and amplify action through collaboration.
