Construction on Canada Avenue begins May 1

(North Cowichan, BC) – Construction is set to begin on Canada Avenue, between Beverly Street and Philip Street. Motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists along this route should plan extra traveling time and expect some delays through the work zone. Construction is estimated to be complete in fall 2023.

Road improvements include raising the road elevation up to a 10-year flood level, installation of new storm and drainage infrastructure, replacement of sanitary sewer and watermain, and sidewalk upgrades, paved multi-use trail, and a new signalized pedestrian crossing. A new flood gate to prevent flooding of the urban core from the Somenos Marsh area is also being installed.

The work will take place Monday to Friday from 7am to 7pm and will mostly include single-alternating traffic with signs and traffic controls persons in place. From time-to-time, Canada Avenue may be closed to through traffic, but will remain open to local traffic. All businesses along Canada Avenue will be open and accessible throughout the construction.
