Flood Debris Management Program - Chemainus River

Background

The Flood Debris Management Secretariat (FDMS) scope is restoring watercourses effected from the November 2021 Atmospheric River Event. FDMS will be completing the final work on the Chemainus  River.

Scope of Work

Specific works related to Chemainus River are highlighted on this FDMS website.

The province plans to complete 6 bendway weirs in partnership with Halalt First Nation to 
stabilize the right bank of the Chemainus River directly downstream of the Hwy 1 bridge.

Prior works include:
  • Emergency sediment removal: Left side channel (downstream of Hwy 1 bridge) completed fall 
    2022
  • Emergency sediment removal: upstream of E&N bridge completed fall 2023
  • Mitigation temporary flood wall: ~1km of flood barrier completed fall 2023
Safety Notices
  • Please do not swim in the river in a vicinity (100m around)
  • Please respect and abide by all signage
  • Traffic controls will be in place on Chemainus Road
Schedule

Work timelines will start August 1 and is anticipated to be completed by fall 2024 by the contractor Stone Pacific. Work hours are 7am to 7pm
