Resident elector information


The close of advanced registration for resident electors is at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.

The Municipality of North Cowichan uses the Provincial Voters List, which will become the official List of Registered Voters on August 26, 2026. If you are qualified to vote but do not think you are on the current Provincial Voters List, you can register online at the Elections BC website www.elections.bc.ca by August 18, 2026 so that you may be added to the official List of Registered Voters.

If you are not sure whether your name is on the Provincial Voters List you can find out by calling 250-746-3131 or by visiting the Municipal Hall, 7030 Trans-Canada Highway, North Cowichan, BC. The office is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding statutory holidays. 

Advance non-resident property elector registration

The close of advanced registration for non-resident property electors is at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, August 25, 2026

Advanced non-resident property elector registrations will be accepted at the North Cowichan Municipal Hall until 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. Non-resident property elector registrations will not be accepted during the period of August 26, 2026 and October 19, 2026, but will be accepted on voting days.

Voting day registration

If you are qualified to vote, but your name is not on the List of Registered Voters, you may register to vote at the voting place immediately before you vote.  Please bring two pieces of identification that provide evidence of your identity and place of residence (i.e., Driver’s Licence, BC Identification Card, BC Care Card, Social Insurance Number Card, credit card, phone or hydro bill, or property tax notice).  One piece of ID must contain your signature.

Elector qualifications

You are eligible to vote as a resident elector if you meet the following qualifications:

  1. age 18 or older on general voting day; and
  2. a Canadian citizen; and
  3. a resident of B.C. for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration; and
  4. a resident of the Municipality of North Cowichan; and
  5. not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or assent voting and not otherwise disqualified by law.

If you own property in the Municipality of North Cowichan but live in another jurisdiction, you may be eligible to vote as a non-resident property elector if you meet the following qualifications:

  1. age 18 or older on general voting day; and
  2. a Canadian citizen; and
  3. a resident of B.C. for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration; and
  4. a registered owner of real property in the Municipality of North Cowichan for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration; and
  5. the only persons who are registered owners of the property, either as joint tenants or tenants in common, are individuals who are not holding the property in trust for a corporation or another trust; and
  6. not entitled to register as a resident elector, and
  7. not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or assent voting and not otherwise disqualified by law, and
  8. if there is more than one registered owner of the property, only one of those individuals may, with the written consent of the majority of the owners, register as a non-resident property elector.

List of registered electors

Beginning September 1, 2026 until the close of general voting for the election on October 17, 2026, a copy of the list of registered electors will be available for public inspection at the North Cowichan Municipal Hall, 7030 Trans-Canada Highway, North Cowichan, BC, during regular office hours, Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding statutory holidays. 

Before inspecting the list, a person must sign a statement that they will not inspect the list, make copies, or use the information included in the list, except for the purposes of Part 3 - Electors and Elections of the Local Government Act. 

Request to omit or obscure

An elector may request that their address or other personal information about them be omitted from or obscured on the list of registered electors. The elector must contact the Chief Election Officer or the Deputy Chief Election Officer to make this request.

Objection to registration of an elector

An objection to the registration of a person whose name appears on the list of registered electors may be made in accordance with the Local Government Act until 4:00 pm on September 11, 2026.  An objection must be in writing and may only be made by a person entitled to be registered as an elector of the Municipality of North Cowichan and can only be made on the basis that the person whose name appears on the list of electors has died or is not qualified to register as an elector of the Municipality of North Cowichan.
