(North Cowichan, BC) – North Cowichan is entering a busy road work season, including one significant project that will see the closure of Herd Road between Trans-Canada Highway and Bell McKinnon Road, and the northbound lane of Bell McKinnon between Norcross and Herd Road for the installation of water and sewer main infrastructure, and road work. The closures begin April 22 and will continue to late summer.
Vehicles traveling westbound on Herd can detour on Bell McKinnon northbound to Mays Road. Both the right and left turn lanes from Trans-Canada Highway onto Herd will be closed and inaccessible. Those needing to access Herd Road from the highway will need to detour via the Mays Road highway intersection.
The construction also impacts the Great Trail along Bell McKinnon. Cyclists and other trail users should avoid the Bell McKinnon Road section due to increased traffic. Alternate routes include Mays Road north of Herd Road and Norcross Road to the south.
Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists should plan ahead and prepare for delays in this area, be mindful of signage, follow the appropriate detours and directions from traffic controllers.
