Update January 4, 2024: Island Corridor Foundation is continuing maintenance work along their rail corridor January 5 to 10. Watch for flaggers, in particular along Duncan Street between James and University Way.

December 12, 2023: Island Corridor Foundation is conducting right-of-way maintenance along their entire rail line corridor. Between now and Christmas crews will be working in the Duncan/south North Cowichan area.

North Cowichan staff have been working closely with Island Corridor representatives on this clean up work, in particular part of North Cowichan between James Street and just north of Beverley Street. ICF plans to remove danger trees – primarily cottonwoods – and mow invasive shrubs like Scotch broom. The Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society has also been involved in discussions on the enhancement of the adjacent salmon stream.

Not only does this work satisfy requirements ICF for maintaining the rail right-of-way, this will also help improve active transportation capacity, support the restoration of native plants, and help clean up this public space.

Watch for crews working in the area over the next two weeks and stay clear of equipment and crews.
