Last week, North Cowichan celebrated the official opening of the new Fuller Lake Disc Golf Course, marking the completion of a community-driven project that has quickly become a popular recreational destination for both residents and visitors. The event highlighted the noteworthy collaborative effort behind the creation of the course, with local government, community organizations, volunteers, and local businesses all playing a vital role.
“The Cowichan Valley Disc Golf Club has put in thousands of hours and organized dozens of volunteer work parties to bring the course to life,” said Shaun Mason, Director, Parks, Recreation, and Forestry. “Their efforts, along with support from local businesses and the Rotary Club of Chemainus, have helped to significantly reduce overall construction costs. By working together, we’ve created a championship level disc golf course and another outstanding recreation amenity for our parks system.”
Using the underutilized municipal lands adjacent Fuller Lake Arena and the highway, the municipality supported the project by conducting site preparation, construction, infrastructure improvements, and worked closely with community partners.
While last week’s event marked the course’s official opening, it has already proven to be a major draw for disc golf enthusiasts. Since last fall, UDisc data shows that more than 1,100 players have completed over 5,500 rounds at the course, with visitors traveling from across Canada and the United States.
Loaner discs are available to borrow at Vancouver Island Regional Library’s Chemainus branch and at Fuller Lake Arena.
Community support and donations went far beyond the work of the Cowichan Valley Disc Golf Club. The Rotary Club of Chemainus generously donated the kiosk structure located at the course entrance and other local businesses including Stone Pacific, Tall Tree Lumber, Surespan Ready-mix, Krazy Joes, Promac, Peters Hauling & Supply, Bear Dog Developments, Mellor excavating, and PDGC Canada also generously donated materials or labour to the course.
Located adjacent Fuller Lake Arena, the 18-hole course was designed by INdesign Disc Golf in partnership with the Cowichan Valley Disc Golf Club and is suitable for players of all ages and skill levels. Learn more about the course at northcowichan.ca/DiscGolf
