North Cowichan is launching Muni Uni, a new way for people to learn about and better understand local government and the services it provides, property taxes, and other important things that help make our municipality work.
“Students” are invited to study the monthly topic, then demonstrate what they learned through a final quiz. Everyone who takes the quiz is eligible to win a prize pack that includes North Cowichan swag, gift cards, and a certificate.
The first “class” begins September 1 on the topic of elections and voting. This is an opportunity to learn how elections are conducted, how to vote in the upcoming local general election in October, and what you need to know to cast your ballot.
Civic literacy is the foundation for a better understanding of how governments work, what they do, how budgets and property taxes are built, and how much things cost. Civic literacy can also help people understand their role in government and how they can share their voice as important decisions are considered and made.
The need for local governments to demonstrate transparency and provide accurate information is growing. In fact, this was the top item cited by participants in this year’s citizen satisfaction survey when asked about what they want to know from North Cowichan.

Monthly topics will align with annual processes such as business planning, the budget, and property taxes, and will provide another way for people to connect with North Cowichan on these important issues.
