Canada Avenue flood gate & road upgrade

- Hours of work: Monday to Friday, 7am to 7pm (please note: the full road closure remains in place and is ongoing 24 hrs/day, 7 days/week)
- Roads: Canada Avenue between Beverly and Philip Streets

What to expect
During construction expect traffic delays and afford yourself extra travel time through the work zone. The site will mostly operate in a single lane alternating configuration, with appropriate signs and traffic control persons in place. From time-to-time Canada Avenue may be closed to through traffic (local traffic only) to efficiently facilitate construction. Supporting detour information to be provided with advanced notice.
Full closure of Canada Avenue
Update Sept 18: The full closure of Canada Ave remains in place due to challenging road conditions. Keeping the road closed will ensure the safety of on-site workers during construction, the public, in addition to structures and infrastructure. All businesses on Canada Ave remain open and accessible, with access via Beverly St.
Detour routes are in place - please follow signage and the direction of flaggers.
The work includes:
- Installation of new flood gate to prevent flooding of the urban core from the Somenos Marsh area. That will allow the existing gap in the flood wall (where Canada Avenue passes) to be plugged during emergency flood protection response.
- Piling work is required to support the flood gate and surrounding flood protection infrastructure.
- Replacing the existing road base with lightweight fill to mitigate road settlement in the existing poor soil conditions
- Raising the road elevation for a portion of Canada Avenue in proximity of Philip Street up to 10-year flood level will permit the intersection of Phillip and Canada Avenue to remain open more frequently.
- Installation of new storm infrastructure with increased capacity to improve drainage and to direct storm water to the Canada Avenue storm pump station.
- Replacement of sanitary sewer and water main (City of Duncan) that is at the end of operational life.
- Active transportation and road improvements that include sidewalk upgrades, paved multi-use trail, new signalized pedestrian crossing and new roadway pavement.
- Traffic calming features such as new medians with narrow channelized driving lanes.
