Description:
Genoa Bay Road provides access to Genoa Bay village along challenging mountainous terrain and a sharp drop off towards the ocean. In addition to ongoing ground settlement, a major storm event in November 2021, caused a localized failure of the roadside slope. For public safety, the northbound lane has been closed since the incident. A private water main underneath the road serving Genoa Bay village residents was temporarily relocated.
North Cowichan’s engineering team has worked with McElhanney Ltd. to find a cost-effective design solution to stabilize the slope and restore both travel lanes. A design-build (DB) project team was retained in January 2026 to develop detailed designs and reconstruct the road, replace the water main after geotechnical stabilization of the slope, and install barriers for added safety. Construction is anticipated to take place in summer of 2026.
Beginning Monday, August 10, Genoa Bay Road will be closed intermittently in both directions to facilitate construction activities. Traffic will be released through the work zone once per hour, at the top of each hour in a single-lane alternating pattern.
This will take place Monday through Saturday, 7am to 7pm. At other times the work zone will revert to single lane alternating with no closures.
Road users should plan for delays of up to one hour and are encouraged to schedule their travel accordingly.
