Apply for North Cowichan’s Climate Action Community Grants

(North Cowichan, BC) – Climate Action Community Grants are available to local community organizations through North Cowichan to support innovative projects that reduce energy use, lower emissions, or help the community adapt to climate change. Organizations that are registered as a society under the BC Society Act or associations under the Cooperative Association Act are eligible to apply.

Since the adoption the Climate Action and Energy Plan (CAEP) in 2013 and update in 2022, North Cowichan has committed to reducing its corporate and community greenhouse gas emissions through various initiatives. Community grants have been offered annually since the establishment of the CAEP Reserve Fund in 2014 and the Reserve Fund Terms of Reference guide the management and expenditures from the fund. Examples of projects include building energy efficiency, reduction of transportation, industrial or agricultural emissions, and more.

Past funds have supported the following community initiatives:

  • The installation of a heat pump to provide cooling to the residents of Abbeyfield Houses Society of Duncan
  • Funds to the Cowichan Green Community to develop an agricultural equipment library and to cover the development permit and engineering expenses for the Food Innovation Hub
  • Funding for Cowichan Energy Alternatives to install a biodiesel pump and school tour and workshops at the Cowichan BioFuel Facility
  • Community asset mapping for climate adaptation and neighbourhood projects through the Cowichan Climate Change Collaborative (Social Planning Cowichan

The deadline to apply is September 15, 2024. Proposals will be reviewed by the Environmental Advisory Committee, with recommendations submitted for Council’s approval. To learn more about the grant application process, eligibility criteria, and to apply, visit www.northcowichan.ca/ClimateGrants
