Localized Flooding in Low-Lying Areas

(North Cowichan, BC) – As of December 26 at 9:30 a.m., Pinson’s Corner (the corner of Chemainus Road at Crofton Road) is closed due to localized flooding. Motorists are advised to use the Trans-Canada Highway and to avoid Chemainus Road at this time.

Localized flooding can be expected during heavy rain events. Following last week’s significant snowfall, the recent warmer temperatures and heavy rain, combined with the upcoming December 27 king tide event, residents should be aware and prepared: clear snow from storm drains surrounding your home or business, and check your home’s eaves and downspouts to ensure the melting snow and water are draining appropriately.

Sandbags and sand are available for residents at the following locations (note – you must bring your own shovel to fill the sandbags):

  • Russell Farms (2711 Mt. Sicker Road)
  • CVRD Bing’s Creek Recycling Centre (3900 Drinkwater Road)

Known areas in North Cowichan where creeks and streams can be expected to overflow outside of the flood protection and dike network include: Mary Street/Philip Street, Rosewood Avenue, Seine Road, and Pinson’s Corner (the intersection of Crofton Road and Chemainus Road). Other areas of the Municipality may experience flooding for a myriad of reasons, including plugged culverts, plugged catch basins, and ditches that are at capacity.
