Applications are now open to community organizations interested in being considered for a North Cowichan Climate Action Community Grant. Grants support innovative projects that reduce energy use, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and help communities prepare for climate change. Registered societies under the BC Society Act and associations under the Cooperative Association Act are eligible to apply.
Since adopting its Climate Action and Energy Plan (CAEP), North Cowichan has taken meaningful steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across municipal operations and the community. Through the Climate Action Community Grants program, funded by the CAEP Reserve Fund, we continue to support local projects that advance climate action. Past projects have improved building energy efficiency, reduced transportation, agricultural and industrial emissions, and strengthened community climate resilience.
Past funds have supported the following community initiatives:
- Creation of an accessible pollinator garden at Clement’s Centre’s Ryall home
- Installation of a heat pump to provide cooling to the residents of Abbeyfield Houses Society of Duncan
- Funding for Volunteer Cowichan to work with Island Health to help older adults stay safe during extreme heat by testing community-based supports that improve heat safety at home
- Funds to the Cowichan Green Community to cover the development permit and engineering expenses for their Food Innovation Hub
The deadline to apply is September 15, 2026. Proposals will be reviewed by the Environmental Advisory Committee, with recommendations submitted for Council’s 2027 budget approval.
