North Cowichan Council has awarded the construction contracts needed to move forward with the new Crofton child care centre. This step supports the start of work on the 44‑space facility on Berridge Street.
The centre is fully funded through a provincial grant from the Ministry of Education and Child Care. The total project budget is $5.44 million.
Site and mechanical services contracts were awarded by Council, with other trade services awarded by the chief administrative officer as those fell under the municipality’s delegation of authority bylaw.
The Eagles Nest child care centre will be operated by the Chemainus Community Schools Association (CCSA Eagle Tree). It will offer care for infants, toddlers, and preschool‑aged children. The single‑storey building will include activity rooms, a kitchen, offices, and outdoor play areas. The location is next to trail access to the Crofton Seawalk which will provide opportunities for supervised outings and outdoor exploration for the children.
Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2026 and is expected to open in 2027.
The project responds to a significant shortage of licensed child care spaces in North Cowichan. Council has emphasized the long‑term benefits for families and the local economy, noting the importance of reliable early learning opportunities.
