Description
To help manage speeding and improve safety along Sherman Road, an all-way stop traffic control will be installed at the two intersecting roads. This will also make it safer for Lane Road traffic to make a turn onto Sherman Road, as recommended by a traffic engineering report of the intersection.
The work also includes:
- narrowing the existing wide travel lanes (approx. 4.5 metre) to the standard 3.3 metre width for arterial roads
- removal of existing separate turn lanes to make the all-way stop operate safely
- improved pedestrian safety elements
- red flashing beacons on Sherman Road to warn drivers of the new stop requirement
- realigning the angle at which Lane meets Sherman to create a perpendicular intersection to improve visibility
What to expect
The work will take approximately two weeks to complete, and will be performed outside of the peak periods of traffic and in the evening to minimize traffic disruptions.
Once work is complete, traffic on Sherman Road will need to stop under the new all-way stop control which will likely result in minor queueing and short delays during peak periods of traffic.
NOTE: the all-way stop control at this intersection is an interim measure. Ultimately, traffic signals are planned for this intersection for long-term satisfactory operations, but current traffic volumes are not high enough to justify signalization at this time.
