Project led by: North Cowichan
Description:
Genoa Bay Road provides access to Genoa Bay village along challenging mountainous terrain and a roadside drop off towards the ocean. During a major storm event in November 2021, cracks appeared on the road surface due to a destabilized roadside slope. To ensure public safety, the northbound lane has been closed since the incident. A water main underneath the road serving Genoa Bay Village residents was also temporarily relocated.
North Cowichan’s engineering team is working with McElhanney Ltd. to find cost effective design solutions to stabilize the slope and restore the road to reopen both travel lanes. The project will involve reconstruction of the road, water main replacement, geotechnical slope stabilization work, and roadside barriers. Construction is anticipated to take place in spring and summer of 2026.
Given the narrow workspace and need for geotechnical work such as drilling and pile driving, there will be longer duration temporary road closures during the construction. Further details will be available once a contractor is selected for the work.
