Alertable notification system

The emergency notification service for the Cowichan Valley Regional District is powered by Alertable. Sign up to get instant notification of major emergencies or disasters in the Cowichan region that may impact you. Subscribers may also opt to receive non-emergency notifications related to local government services. Signing up is easy and can be done from your mobile phone, tablet, or computer. There is no fee to sign up.

Fire Protection

The North Cowichan Fire Department is a trained and dedicated team of on-call paid firefighters with four fire halls: Chemainus, Crofton, Maple Bay and South End. 


North Cowichan is served by a local detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Details on your local policing services can be found here.

North Cowichan can experience flooding events, in particular during the spring and during atmospheric river (or 'pineapple express') rain events. Low-lying areas, areas adjacent to creeks, streams, and rivers, and river floodplains can all experience flooding that can impact roads, homes, and businesses. During and after a significant flood event, North Cowichanwill provide up-to-date information on impacts and resources available.

Health Services

Island Health (VIHA) provides health care to the residents of Vancouver Island, and oversees North Cowichan's main hospital, Cowichan District Hospital

Ambulance services are provided by British Columbia Ambulance Service and St. John Ambulance.
